Cross Stool

CAM (CNC Router)

I made this stool during my time at school for an exacting set of design criteria:

1. You must design a stool.

2. The stool must be entirely cut on the CNC Router using only a 1/2” bit.

3. The stool must not use any hardware or glue.

4. It must be cut from one 40x40” sheet of 1/2” Baltic Birch plywood.

Those stringent constraints forced me to experiment to find the best way to get the maximum height, and strength – while maintaining a decent seat size – within a small sheet of relatively thin plywood.

Through that experimentation I discovered my love of iterative design and design as problem solving. By using CAM tools, I can quickly prototype and iterate to arrive at a design that performs well and I’m happy with. From this project onward that iterative approach became an integral part of how I approach design.
