Bridge Workbench (In Progress)

Steel Sheet, Steel Tube, Powder Coat

Materials:

Principal Processes:

TIG Welding, CAM (5-Axis Tube Laser)

In many ways this workbench is an evolution of Bridge Table. Though this bench is directly inspired by a few specific bridges; primarily the Forth Rail Bridge, and a number of arch bridges like the New River Gorge Bridge, Ross Island Bridge, and Sellwood Bridge.

This design was borne out of a desire to significantly simplify making Bridge Table. The legs were the most complex part of that project, each welded together from 24 parts! Using the new technology of 5-axis tube lasers, it’s possible to easily cut precise patterns into steel tubing. Designing with that in mind, I was able to significantly reduce part count on the legs while retaining the bracing details and hard points necessary for bolted assembly. Expanding on the idea of using laser cutting for the rest of the structure led to this design.
